Amputation

Amputation is the removal of a bodily appendage or tissue area through trauma or surgical procedure. When used in a medical setting, it can help to contain diseases such as gangrene. When trauma removes a limb, it can severely inhibit and alter the life of the person involved. Often the victim suffers from "phantom limb" syndrome, in which the sensation of the former limb or bodily area exists despite the physical loss. The mental and physical strain of living without part of the body can have indelible effects on the health and welfare of the amputee.

Types of amputation can include:

- Leg

  • amputation of digits
  • partial foot amputation (Chopart, Lisfranc)
  • ankle disarticulation (Syme, Pyrogoff)
  • below-knee amputation (transtibial)
  • knee-bearing amputation (knee disarticulation)
  • above knee amputation (transfemoral)
  • Van-ness rotation
  • hip disarticulation
  • Hemipelvectomy

- Arm

  • amputation of digits
  • metacarpal amputation
  • wrist disarticulation
  • forearm amputation (transradial)
  • elbow disarticulation
  • above-elbow amputation (transhumeral)
  • shoulder disarticulation and forequarter amputation

- Hemicorporectomy, or amputation at the waist.
- Genital modification and mutilation.

All forms of traumatic amputation cause immense personal loss. If another person or party's actions cause the amputation, they may be liable for the pain and suffering the amputee endures.

If you or a loved one has suffered an injury, illness or death that lead to or was caused by amputation, call VanDerGinst Law at 1-866-843-7367 or click here for a FREE online case evaluation. The initial consultation is free of charge. If we agree to handle your injury case, we will work on a contingency fee basis, which means we get paid for our services only if, and when, there is a money recovery for you. In many cases a lawsuit must be filed before an applicable expiration date, known as a statute of limitations. So please call right away to ensure that you do not waive your right to possible compensation.
